I see/read positive and negative comments about Joe and I saw both sides.

I did not play football Joe's junior year(1961-1962 when Broughton won the state championshi)p. I did play the year earlier and Joe and most sophomores were all on the JV team, not the varsity team. Joe and I played the same position, therefore I got to know him maybe better than most. He should have played earlier for Daniels and not Morson because of where he lived. The most striking thing about Joe was he seamed to have that "mean" streak about him which is needed to play LINEBACKER. Had he lived and not got injuried at collage, Joe could have been in the NFL, that's how good he was. He was also a fullback and had speed and  probably have done well at that position in college. Alcohol goes "well" with "nothing". Joe would have been a "star". Joe's early death keep him from playing his senior year. Maybe with Joe,we could have again won the state title, but we lost to Rocky Mount who had Danny Talbert and he was to be Carolina's 4 year "starter quarterback". Joe's defensive skills could have made a big difference in that game!!!

Another fact about Joe was that he had a very nice 55 or 56 green and white two door hardtop oldsmobile. It impressed me for my father was a used car dealer and I knew "cars" from that factor. As he would let me take cars from his lot to drive, some may have thought that I was "RICH" for drivivg so many different cars to school.

The other out-standing thing about Joe's Olds was it had high- dollar tires. Instead of white walls, it's tires had a smaller sized RED ring where the white walls would be found on tires. I can't remember the make of the tires. I have often wondered if that Olds was the car in which he died in. As I did not play football in the 1961-62 season, I was not as close to Joe as others were. And did not attend the championship game.  GO CAPS!!!

I seem to recall that Travis Olives's older brother died in a car wreck on that "slick" section of WADE AVE near the pool.

I thought Joe's wreck was not in Raleigh. I read "others" to say his wreck was at two different locations??? Which is correct???

Joe Strickland was my first "boy friend."  We were in the same classes in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades at Myrtle Underwood.  He would go home with me  after school and we would spend and hour or so climbing trees and talking. (Yes, I was a tomboy back then.)

When we got to Daniels he discouraged me from having anything to do with him.  He was running with a rough crowd and did not want me to be a part of it.  This was the same group that eventually led to his death in the automobile accident.

I, too, remember his funeral.  It was packed.

I think of him ofter when I walk past his house on St. Mary's Street.

Joe and I played football on opposite teams until Jr. High. When at Myrtle Underwood we got into a fight in front of the drug store (soda fountain) one day and neither of us could over power the other. From that day on we were very good friends, although we ran in different circles. We had a mutual respect and his family was very nice. He was a good ball player and worked hard at it until his death. l remember that they let everyone out of school to go to the funeral and we were pall barers. I liked him a lot. He was crushed under the car when he was thrown out and it rolled over him. I don't know where that happened, but I think the Tryon Road curve seems likely. The accident mentioned near the Hayes Barton pool was Travis Olive's brother. He ran into the bridge support going West onto Wade Ave. I had heard of Joe's reputation, but never experienced any of it. Around me, to me, he was as good a friend as anyone could be. It was very sad, and makes me sad now to think back about it. Most of our interaction was football....me opening a hole for him to run through or assisting each other on a tackle. He was part of the team and took it seriously. He was a good guy.

I have several fond memories of Joe.  I do remember that he had a mischieveous smile and a twinkle in his eye as others have noted.

The picture of the Little League football team sponsored by Pepsi reminded me that we played football together. It was  my first year playing organized football.  I was so far down the roster that my first helmet didn't have a face mask!  Of course, coaches White (Rick White's father) and Joe Mills saw to it that I got one with a face mask for scrimmages and games.

The year after the picture shown, our Pepsi team was undefeated and won the Raleigh city championship. I can't remember if Joe play on that team or had moved up to the Jr Hi team.

Two memories do stick out from that 2nd year of Little League. First, Andy Pate got the team penalized (maybe 15 yds) for stomping on the ref's penalty flag - which was the ref's handkerchief. Second, I split the seat of my pants (top to bottom) sliding across the goal line to score.  I didn't realize they were torn until the next play when I bent over in the huddle and felt a draft.

Back to my friend Joe- it is sad to lose someone so young whose whole life is ahead.  Who knows what he might have been or what he might have accomplished had his life not ended so early.

I thought Joe's  wreck was on the Tryon Road bridge next to RGA golf course.

I have a number of stories to tell about my friend Joe. Joe and I were in Mrs. Justice's fifth grade class at Myrtle Underwood school.

Story 1:  Joe and I were walking across the front lawn at Myrtle Underwood in winter of 1956. I was playing with a close pin gun shooting matches. As we were walking, we looked back and realized that we had set a thirty foot circle of grass on fire around the flag pole. Joe helped me put it out and we ran like the wind. I hope the statue of limations has run out. We were never caught.

More to follow later:

There is a photograph of my 5th grade class in the photo gallery. Who could help me identify class members.
