Stan and I became friends in the 7th grade. He always amazed me with his mind and his discipline. We played all three sports in junior high school, beating Daniels in the 8th grade in football to end their undefeated season and create ours. We had an undefeated baseball team in the 9th grade; Stan could hit the ball out of Devereux Meadow.
When we got to Broughton, he decided to specialize in studies, football and community services. He was a starter and a great contributor to our 61state champion football team. Stanley was offered a football scholarship to the University of Virgina, but turned it down to take the Morehead at UNC. He planned to play football at Carolina, so we roomed together his freshman year. Knee injuries prevented him from playing, so he moved to his fraternity house.
Stan served in Vietnam under difficult conditions. After the war, he worked in New York as a CPA before returning to Raleigh to set up his practice 30 years ago. We shared an office space together. Stan was happily married with a son who was an outstanding baseball player. We had a mutual friend, Allan From (terrific estate planning attorney) who says Stan wás the smartest CPA that he has ever known.
Stan died in his sleep November 8, 2001. I miss him.
Stanley and I were friends from 7th grade on.... I loved baseball and so did Stanley. He would come down to our house on Locke Lane and we would play homerun derby! Somtimes I would beat all of the boys and if not Stanley would win. It was a great time and a great memory.
