I'm so sorry to learn about Rober Underwood!  I remember him from elementary school.  A really nice guy!

Robert Underwood was born on February 3, 1945 in Nashville, TN. He grew up in Raleigh, NC and graduated from UNC, Chapel Hill. He received a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the U. of VA in 1973. He taught applied mathematics, statistics and computer science at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. After his retirement he went to California where he used his math skills to create the mane for the lion in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. He retired to Annapolis MD. Robert loved tennis, cycling, sailing, and skiing. He is survived by his daugher Margaret, her husband Shannon Schilling and their daughters Liliana and Eva of Portland, OR, his daughter Kate and her children, James, Nye and Ona Underwood of Ferndale, his son William Underwood of Bellingham, his former wife Louisa Underwood of Ferndale, his brother Emory and wife Angie of Ashville, NC, and sister Marion of Charlottesville, VA. Robert passed away after a long illness on Jan. 7, 2017. A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Ferndale on February 19, 2017 at 3:00 p.m.
