In response to Susie's memory of Mrs. Peacock's class:
So many students credit Mrs. Peacock for writing skills, including me. Some have become published authors like Armisted Maupin and much older & now deceased, Reynolds Price.
My first day of class she frightened me "to no end" exclaiming and pointing to me -- "You (pause) are sitting in the seat of Reynolds Price. I had no clue who Reynolds Price was at that time. Somehow I was certain I should already know, after she asked me whether I knew who he was.
In sev'l publications, including his autobiography, he attributes his pursuing writing to her and includes a large photograph of her in the book.
I can remember her handwriting somewhat to do this day, since she marked my themes heavily with comments, like "verbose."
I do remember her fondly and was fortunate enough to attend her memorial service, at which Wallace Finlator's dad gave a memorable eulogy. At the end someone threw orchids as a symbol of her saying "orchids to you" as a great compliment.
Do you remember our spelling lists and vocabulary book "Gilmartin?" That really helped us prepare for the SAT! Since I didn't take Latin, these were the 2nd best ways to build spelling & vocabulary skills.
I can visualize her flowing across the room to the windows to make a strong point and sharing her trips to England with us when they fit our literature discussions. I fulfilled one my dreams made in her class -- to visit the Shakespeare Theater and Dickens' London.
We are blessed to have been inspired by so many great faculty! See you soon. Janice Young Britson
