Hi, classmates,

I just wanted you to know that Libby Howard Carico is nicely settled in an assisted living apartment in Asheboro, NC.  She has a wonderful attitude that only a strong faith can bring!  Lucky for her she has very supportive sons and daughters-in-law.  She really appreciates cards friends have sent, and I wanted to give you her new address:

Janice,

Thank you for updating us about Libby.  I am glad she is in a good place where she has help.  I know this is so difficult for her and her family.  It is  good to have supportive family members.  I hope they live close enough so they can visit with her.  We will keep her in our thoughts and prayers.  Thanks for the address .   This gives us the opportunity to keep in contact with her.

Today, when I saw Janice Young Britson's post at the Forum, I decided to have a look.  During the reunion, Janice sent me a moving and eloquent letter about her appreciation for our teachers at Broughton which has caused me to reflect on the commitment and generosity of many of them.  I wanted to see what more Janice had to say.  When I hit the Forum I decided to read all the messages.  I was struck by their kindness  and just wanted to let you know that I appreciate and admire it.  I hope you are all having a good start to the New Year.  ----- david gerstel

Linda Davis (Wilkerson)

I would like to personally thank everyone who has sent prayers and thoughts to me during my recent illness.  I had cardiac ablation to correct atrial fibrillation in September, and that led to me continuing to seek answers for gastric problems and loss of appetite, and weight loss.  Turns out I had pancreatic cancer, which was confirmed the nights before Thanksgiving, no less.  It was discovered very early, was located in the area that could be easily removed, and was totally operable.  I had it done January 8, and they took the spleen, as well--all done through laparoscopic surgery.  I am convinced that being on so many prayer lists, etc., guided my good-looking surgeon's hands, as well as all the OR staff, and post-op care staff, etc.  I came home after 3 days, and have had an amazing recovery!  I now get preventative chemotherapy one day a week for a 3-week cycle, with a week off on the 4th week.  No side effects so far, and I feel fine-though I just started last week.  The Lord has truly blessed me, and I can feel all the thoughts and the prayers that gave me such strength and hope.  I never felt that the surgery would not go well, and had confidence from the time I met the surgeon.  As an old OR nurse myself, I knew too much about it all, but I also had high expectations from the ones doing my procedure and giving the anesthesia, etc.  Thanks again to all of you, and I hope to see you divas at the next gathering.

I started radiation treatments for breast cancer this past week.  It is 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, for 6 weeks.  My daily appointment is at 2 pm.  Not too bad.  I can live with that!  It takes 10 minutes to get there, 10 minutes for the treatment, and 10 minutes to get home so it is not too time-invasive.  I don't have to have chemotherapy so no nausea and no hair loss that goes with that.  Radiation does make you tired and it is a cumulative tiredness.  A friend of mine who had it said she slept 18 hours a night her last week.  Since I am older than her and already tired, I figure I'll just hibernate, come out for the treatment, and just go back to bed!  Ha!

Love and Prayers, Peggy Poe

Hey Peg..you still have your sense of humor, and that along with all of the prayers will get you through your radiation treatments; so hibernate away, but don't forget to come out for a short period Monday-Friday!! Everyone that I know who has had radiations experiences the fatigue you are talking about.

Take care; will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Betsy

Hi Peggy,

I wish the best for you during the radiation and after. A woman at my church is going through it too. She has had a lot of support from our local Breast Cancer Coalition. Is there a support group like that near you? They may be able to give you advice on how to make treatment symptoms more tolerable.

Kay

Thank you to those of you who have been praying for me during the last six weeks of radiation therapy for breast cancer.  My last treatment was today.  I'm through!  Hurray!  We ate at Red Lobster and used a gift card and a coupon and Red Lobster paid the difference to honor me!  I was able to eat a free meal of lobster tail, my all-time favorite food in the world, for supper.  If you hear fireworks later tonight, that is me celebrating!  Just listen for the "boom-boom-boom"!  It might even make it up to North Carolina!  Ha!

Sherry Gray (McNeil)

Hello, Peggy, congratulations on your good news!  You brought back memories of stopping at the Red Lobster in Statesville (halfway between our Linville Falls home and Duke Hospital) whenever my husband finished his treatments.  It was wonderful to have nice 'normal' meels there.  We never managed to get a free one though! :)   I pray that you will enjoy many wonderful years to come.
